acpid is a free, multiplatform, and non-interactive ACPI daemon that works seamlessly with most major operating systems.
The /proc/acpi/events interface has been deprecated in recent Linux kernel versions. The same information is available through netlink, which is a way to communicate with the input layer and userspace.
The acpid is a fully-fledged event daemon that can handle all types of events that occur in the context of ACPI. It sends events to the netlink interface and execute programs to handle the events.
The acpid software can be used to handle events that are related to Power Management or other ACPI-based features. It is a very flexible and extensible system.
If the /proc/acpi/event file is used, acpid will listen to it and execute programs to handle the events that happen.
